Shopping in York

Shopping in York is a bit like shopping used to be before the big chains took over the high street. Although well served by well-known high-street names you can also find one-off boutiques and individual shops that you wont find in many other cities.

Stonegate

My favourite shopping street in York, Stonegate has a combination of high end chain stores – think The White Company and Jo Malone – plus lots of individual, one-off shops such as The Pyramid Gallery (rubbish website but lovely shop), Wild Hart and Saffrons of York.

Gillygate

Gillygate is a bit off the beaten track but worth a stroll down for it’s unique shops and cafes. You’ll find Cafe Number 8 down Gillygate along with Millers Yard a centre for positive living which runs classes and one off workshops and has a great little cafe.

Coney Street

Coney Street is where you’ll find all the high street regulars – River Island, Next, Monsoon, Dorothy Perkins, Boots, TK Max, Warehous, H&M, Zara, BHS and Mango plus a few not so regulars including Yumi and City Screen, York’s independent cinema which has a fantastic licensed cafe.

Monks Cross Shopping Park

A fantastic rainy day shopping location as all the shops are linked by a covered walkway. There’s the big high street big names and a Starbucks and M&S food. Monks Cross has a great baby changing and private feeding room.

While you’re out that way there’s a fab big store called the The Range which has bargains galore.

If shopping all day is not your bag then there’s always Waterworld which has waves, slides, rapids and a lazy river.

York Designer Outlet

I didn’t know I like designer things until I visited the outlet and realised I could afford them! The name of the game here is bargains and I absolutely love a bargain. Again, it’s a perfect rainy day trip as the outlet is completely undercover. The food court there is worth a trip on its own with Pizza Express, Bagel Nash and Pret a Manger along with your run-of-the-mill burgers and fries.
